“And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech…And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there…And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do; and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do… Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” Genesis 11:1

BABEL is evoked as a reference to the different layers of electomagnetic / mechanical waves that exist on the sourroundings of the device that are operating beyond/below our hearing range. The workshop proposes to materialize and challenge the limits of human perception within art practice, through improved design, construction and use of reverse engineering of industrial devices for analysis, transmission and audification/visualisation of invisible or inaudible frequencies: the electromagnetic spectrum is used as a creative resource for research and artistic practice.

The BABEL Device is a translator that gives us back the understanding lost in biblical age; it un-covers not the human languages, but the encrypted codes of information, the language of man/machine communication which is again unified like the pre-babylonian speech, but remains unitelligible without technical aid. Sharpening an awareness for the invisible city around us, we will capture wireless, 2.4 GHz, radio waves, FM / AM, ultrasound, translocal network connection, personal broadcast space, VLF, VHF, UHF, inaudible electromagnetic fields, the photo-electric effect, and practice with solar cells and light sensitive diodes for detecting the modulation of different wavelengths in the visible spectrum to transform it into sound, etc.

BABEL as a singular unit, works as a low voltage audio power amplifier with the ability to magnify its line/data input over 200 times with a low distortion: 0.2% on its output. When mounted one over another, it creates a tower with the possibility of connecting all of them together in series with an exponetial amplification of the source, or in parallel as a multiple audio output object.
It features the possibility to connect a variety of sensors on its input, modulating or converting visible or infrared light to sound, electromagnetic fields, magnify friction, create hydrophones to listen under water and connect to a microcontroller trough its data in/out connectors.

Dokumentation der Einführung

What we will do

During the course of the workshop we will introduce the participants to analog modules and other electronic resources, cover theoretical and practical issues related to the construction of electronic devices, establish guidelines for material recycling, build different sensors, and listen.

At the end of the workshop, all built modules will be tested and adjusted for proper operation, culminating in a collective installation/performance.
Attendees will take home all the material built.

Needs and Qualifications

Price only for material 45€
kit with all the materials included: ABS enclosure, metallic potentiometer, led, 2 switches (on-off and x20/200 times amplification), 4 sensors (light cell, electromagnetic inducer, antenna, hidrophone/contact microphone), battery and PCB)

No prior knowledge in electronics required..

Tarjet People interested in radio waves experimentation, audio / video wireless transmission, electromagnetism, performance, custom electronics, courious, sound artists, m…
